Oh man, now here is a knife with tremendous character. Do you know where the knife was made? Is the guard painted or is it brass? Very interesting and another one I refer to as a "cowboy knife" . You will note on both the knives you have shown, both have what is refered to as the reinforced guard as opposed to the often used thin NS ones around 1/16 inch thick or so. These came into use very late in the 19th century as seen in some of my early factory catalogs. Nice. Lets see some more.

Shotgun Steve, That finger qrove dates WAYYYYYYYY back to the early 1830 or so. I have seen it on a couple knives I owned, one a guardless and some others that Norm has. I have coppied the file for my records and would appreciate any more info you get on it.
