Saw an interresting carbine today at a Pawn Shop. It was obviously a British Enfield carbine BUT it was marked US PROPERTY on the left side of the receiver and the forestock did not have the typical barrel band at the front but rather looked as though someone had tried to sporterize it. Both pieces of forestock were rounded . Barrel had the cone-shaped flash suppressor and "eared" front sight/blade.

Have any of you ever seen such an animal?  Price was $399 as is.

St. George

Parts gun - they're all over the market, now, and are 'not' original.

The 'US PROPERTY' Enfields were built by Savage as No. 4 Mk 1 and No.4  Mk 1* rifles - not as carbines.

The originals were part of the American 'Lend-Lease Program' during WWII.

I have one of the real Savage made no4 Mk1*s, and its definately a big battle rifle, not a carbine.

St. George nailed it. Someone tried to build something similar to a No5 Jungle Carbine.
Definately not a 399.00 gun.

Professor Marvel

there was a going concern in the manufacture of ersatz jungle carbines:

"All No5 Mk1 Jungle Carbines have a receiver unique to itself and not like previous models - No1 MKIII, No4 Mk1 et al ... any so-called Jungle Carbine that is built on a No4 receiver is one of the many clones of the Jungle Carbine out there and are not legit. There were two U.S companies building clones of the No5 ... Gibbs and Santa Fe."

I saw a Gibbs at a local show a year ago for 250, and passed on it. Was also in .308, which would have been nice, but......

I remember that Gibbs was also making imitation jungle carbines out of the Ishapore (Indian) enfields, that were made in 308. They also made them rechambered to 45-70, (or maybe re-barrelled), and a kind of "scout carbine" that had a forward mounted scope.
