Well I finally bought some canvas at Wally Mart today, what a difference in the finishing of edges.  Its like night and day.  I assume you should finish the color first as plane leather will become less likley to take a finish  in the areas of spill over burnishing.
Any thoughts Pards or suggestions.

AC, I sure ain't the last word on anything but for what its worth I do all of my dyeing before I burnish. Just the way I was taught and I am sure there are other ways of doing it.

I was taught to dye before burnishing too.I have assorted antler tips I use for burnishing, big ones for large surfaces all the way down to small tipsfor tight areas.Dave ;D

Yep, sometimes I need to sand the edge smooth then I dye then burnish with antler.  Just learned through trial and error...mostly error.

OH, also if I have small parts that are going to be hard to get to I dye them and burnish before I sew them to the main body of the holster.

As wiley said , I learned that thru trail and error also

Thanks for all the tips, as I don't have access to antler I will have to make do with the canvas, but it works really good.  Again Thanks,

Works great doesn't it AC!

A few cents worth of cloth and very little work. A yard of canvas will last a long long time.

Make sure you use a differant piece for each color you do.

Ya it does, I got a piece 3' x 6' for less than $5.00. Can't beat that, I'll probably never use all of that.
