Rare Civil War Period Iron Frame Prescott Navy Revolver

Very few were made...and, like the Bacon Navy, would have been a major sidearm in the Civil War had Smith & Wesson not put the maker out of business.
A .38 caliber Prescott revolver, with a 7.5-inch barrel, serial number 415, and a brass trigger guard. The gun itself measures 12.25-inches in overall length. Cylinder also has the number 161 on it. All markings are excellent, and the gun is mechanically excellent. All matching pieces, including cylinder pin and grips. Gray patina overall.. Prescott was sued by Smith & Wesson and stopped production early. This gun was chambered for the very powerful .38 rim fire cartridge which was the equal of any percussion Navy revolver by Colt or any other makers, and two to three times more powerful than Smith & Wesson's biggest revolver of the time.

Vinegar is wine that has overdone the aging thing.  Sounds like 4-T-Rod to me.

The Prescott and others violated the ROLLIN-WHITE  Patent.  This was a very destructive patent of dubious validity, IMHO, that neatly put America behind in the development of cartridge arms.  Britain and Europe wisely ignored Rollin White. When White attempted to renew his patent the War Dept. put the fix in and renewal was denied.
