Anyone know the name of the distinctly different oil that USFA's come from the factory with?

Charlie Bison

Thats something I have wondered a time or two before, ??? anybody?

I found this on Grant Cummingham's site on "The Perfect Gun Oil":

"Dexron-type Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). That's right, plain ol' ATF. The kind you get at every gas station, auto parts store, and even most convenience stores. Synthetic or regular, either will work just fine. (ATF does have a slight odor to it. ..."

Could that be the scent on new USFA's that I've asked about?

Hooplehead

I tried to ask this question by calling USFA but all I got was voice mail going to full mailboxes.  ::)  so I called Colt under the assumption that since USFA had done such a fine job of  copying Colt's design that they might be using the same oil also. The folks at Colt said that it wasn't the same as what they used, and they couldn't say for sure, but that they were fairly certain it was Snake Oil.   ;D

typical Colt repsone when it comes to USFA!   ;D

Virginia Gentleman, There is a oil by that name. I have some of it. I purchased mine from Dillon's web site. It is said to be a high grade weapons oil that is synthetic.

Yes, I know I have some I got from Dillon, it is vegetable based actually and is mostly Jojoba oil which is a modern "green" replacement for Sperm Whale Oil.  SWO, was used for years in guns, especially machine guns, watches, early automatic transmission fluids and lamps.

Is it possible that the USFA factory oil may be Ballistol with its anise fragrance?

One of life's little quirks: Any oil for guns by the acronym "ATF."  I like it.

I'm always on the look-out for a better lubricant for my guns. The very best I've found yet is called "GIBBS". It runs about $16.00 (msrp) a can, superior lubricant, displaces water, doesn't "gum up", removes rust, resists fingerprints, safe on wood or leather, etc.etc.  Really great stuff, and a little goes a long way.
