Hello All,
I have been reading quite a bit here on the 1876 forum room and am wondering if there is a recommendation on the brand of 1876 to purchase.  I take it from reading that they are all made by Uberti and that about 1 in 6 have to be returned.  it also appears that some firms have better customer no service than others.

So which company should I buy from?

I purchased my 1876 from Cimarron Arms, via Buffalo Arms, a few months ago. Mine is a standard model in 45-60 and worked just fine out of the box. As per my personal preference, I broke it down and lightly stoned any burrs left over from the machining processes. The wood fits perfectly and is finished quite nicely. No complaints there. Jamison brass chambers properly and has the correct diameter rim, which fits on the bolt face as it should. I understand that the selection of brass in some calibers can be an issue. I am extremely pleased with my Uberti, and would highly recommend it to anyone looking at the 1876. Yes, it does cost a few hundred more than the Chaparral, but from what I have been reading over the past year or so, the extra money was worth it. Good luck!

Zane - welcome to the camp!

First off, I recommend you do some more reading of the forum.

Second - All 1876s are not made by Uberti.  Chaparral 1876s are made Armi Chiappa, also known as Armisport.  Both are made in Italy, each has pros and cons.  However, I think most folks agree that Uberti makes a higher quality rifle with better fit and finish.  There were a lot of problems early on, especially with Chappys.  But there are many satisfied chappy owners out there now.

Uberti's are more expensive, but they are well made.  Buffalo Arms, Cimmaron, & Taylors all sell Uberti's.  CDNN sells chappys at discount prices, but I'm not sure where you would get it serviced or find parts.

If you are a gambler, you may want to go with a Chappy.  If not, spend a little more $$ up front and get the Uberti.

I have an Uberti .50-95 I bought directly from Taylors and it has been flawless.

Thank you Gentlemen.  I'll continue to read the 76 forum as recommended before I decide.

Although the Chaparral rifles were manufactured in Italy, they are not a product of Chiappa/Armi Sport. Here is the Armi Sport catalogue:

I own a .56-.50 Spencer carbine made by Armi Sport, and imported by Cimarron, and it is of excellent quality, with superb fit and finish. It has none of the faults associated with Chaparral products. I believe that Chaparral were a new company, formed by workers from a prior replica gun enterprise. It is my impression that although their rifles are still on the market, Chaparral are now defunct.

I will certainly endorse the Uberti 1876. My .50-95, imported by Cimarron, and also obtained by way of Buffalo Arms (a firm I can not recommend too highly), is a beautiful rifle that functions perfectly in every respect.

I stand corrected on the Chaparral Co.

I found this explanation from Nate Kiowa Jones that states it clearly:

"Chiappa and Chaparral are and have always been two different makers. Chiappa is the family name of the previous company known as Armi sport ( the owner is Rino Chiappa). Chaparral is the new name for company owned by the folks that were previously known as Armi San Marco (the owner is Angelo Bufoli). Two different companies entirely."

Welcome to the fire, Zane.  Make yourself to home! :)

There are two makers; Uberti and Chaparral.  Both makers are Italian, but that is all they have in common! ;D

The Chaparral has had many quality control issues, and parts and service on this side of the pond are no longer available, although parts can be had from Italy.  A few of the fellas have gotten good examples, or have been able to make them work, but most have not been so fortunate.

My personal recommendation would be one of the Uberti 76 models.   The two importers who sell the Uberti 76 are Taylors and Cimarron Arms.  The success, fit and finish, and overall quality of the Uberti 76 has been excellent.  It is well worth the extra money. :)

I have had three different Uberti's, two Cimarrons and one Taylors. I sold the 50/95 Taylors 'cause I didn't care for some of the minor details, but I still have the two Cimarrons, in 45/60 and 45/75. Other than soft screws, I have found nothing major to complain about in any of the Ubertis....oh, and yes, they look great too!   ;)

Dirty Brass:
I also have a Uberti '76 in 45-75.  I have never had any problems with it other than the trigger pull and the rear site.  I got the pull down to 5 pounds which is where I wanted it and then got a ladder rear sight and that is what I wanted also.  I did refinish the wood as I did not like the original finish.  I used linseed oil.  Looks more originally like.  I had started all this out with a Cimerron and sent it back and got the Uberti and am very glad I did.  Right Griz?   ;)
