Yep it's here, our own Nebraska home grown Holiday.  A local nurserie's radio ad says they will "install" any tree over $150 for free. ???

J. Sterling Morton was an early Nebraska settler and pushed for his holiday.

What chance would it have today, replace a viable native enviroment with a non-native one, often involving non-native species. :o

Ok I like trees, but I like prairie also and the tall grass type is almost gone.

BTW an acre of healthy tall grass prairie is said to produce more O2 in a year than an acre of rain forest.

I love the smell of Black Powder in the morning!

Joyce (AnnieLee)

I dunno, they were sticks with the roots wrapped in wet paper towels then shoved into a zip-loc bag. They're about 15 inches long and have since sprouted leaves.

And now they are on the way to Del.

I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

Joyce (AnnieLee)

Buck, have you put out your hummingbird feeders yet? I didn't have mine setup, I thought it was too early for them.... until a male divebombed me on Tuesday to remind me.

He's full of energy, flits every which direction, and lets everyone know when he is annoyed. I think I'm going to name him "Del."

T'was Monday I got to see some revenge on ol' J. Morton.  Was helpin' my wife's niece at her day care and me and the older kids were outside.  Well we are on the east side of the airport on a hill and I seen white smoke over the ridge 4 miles away.  Well I know grass fire smoke when I see it, but it soon went out.

Then another small one, not quite the same place, and then when it died another and another, then a big one, we could see the flames and I then knew what was up. The small fires were burning fire breaks and the big one was the main fire.  The University researchers were burnin' 9 mile Praire, 9 miles from down-town and one of the best chunks of Tall-Grass left, burnin' keeps the trees out.  A beutiful place it is, in about a month the burned area will be green and the flowers will be abound, cause the praire does best when burned every few years.

I found this link, the US Postal Service has even issued a stamp to honor the place.
