Anyone had any experience with a black powder substitute called Black Mag Xp ?  They have some pretty incredible claims for it but I can't find any confirmation of their data. http://www.emainehosting.com/blackmag/specs.html

Blackpowder Burn

Let's just say I'm extremely skeptical of their claims.  There appear to be quite a few contradictory statements, such as "easier to ignite" , "lower pressures" , "higher velocities than black powder", etc.  Quite a few of their testimonials appear to be from folks that have no real experience with black powder.

Call me a traditionalist, but I've tried the subs and still prefer the real thing.

Which only further shows their ignorance!  Black powder doesn't "stink".  It is, in fact, a natural perfume! ;D

Nor do any of the nitro based powders.  Based on their 'general advertising words', my suspicion is this stuff is the same as Blackhorn 209 that is some original gunpowder and some nitro based smokeless powder.  Just wondering if the SASS rules committee has some analytical data on the stuff?

I just don't understand how it can produce higher velocities with only 1/2 the pressure of the real stuff.  I know pressure and velocity don't always go hand in hand, but they're usually fairly close.  Like most of other posters the price will keep me far, far away.

Why would you use something that is not the real thing? Real BP for around $10 a pound when bought in bulk.

Howdy Fairshake,

Onlyist reason I can figure is that the legals will allow one and not the other.  I've seen that and take pity on pards that can't legally own black powder.  I try to help 'em when I kin.  Usually, their only recourse is at the polls.  Vote the buggers out of office that would infringe their sport.

As far as downrange results are concerned, the sub/replicas haven't shown me anything that I can't do better and easier with Holy Black.  Same goes for the loading bench, storage and cleanup.

The stuff is hard to find, but I do have one friend that shoots Frontiersman a lot and is a regular BP user.  Some local shop up in Northern Arizona carries it.  He says it is about like 777.  More powerful than real BP and easy to clean.  Not as dense as real BP, so that 10 oz can goes further.
