Winchester Gunsmith needed!

Howdy Pards,

Looking for a recommendation for an experienced Winchester gunsmith.

I have a model 1894 Win., big loop, 44-40, made in 1982 that I picked up a few years ago. While it ain't pretty, the bore still looks good. Probelm is when I open the action, the lever and it's mechanism is all loose and sloppy. Then I have feeding and ejecting issues.

Looking for a gunsmith who can disassemble, clean, refit new parts as needed so I can put this rife in service. Can't afford a Doug Turnbull restoration (wish I could).

Any recommendations?

No one has answered your question, so I'll take a stab at it.  The Model 94 was designed for rifle length cartridges like the .30-30 and .38-55.  They just plain don't always work well with pistol length cartridges like the .44-40.  Few people use them for cowboy action shooting because they are slow and clunky and as a consequence there aren't any real specialists for them.  What you need is just a good general gunsmith to clean and get your rifle running.  They are all kind of loose and sloppy so without looking at your rifle it's hard to tell if it is unusually loose and sloppy.  Just look for a good general gunsmith in your area.  They made millions of Model 94s so pretty much any gunsmith should be familiar with them.

I think Pettifogger has pretty mich summed it up .... I own a Model 94 that was very persnickety about OAL even in the .45 LC that it was made to fire. It wanted factory ammo' reloads; a reloaded bullet a sixteenth of an inch shorter or longer would jam the gun ...

But it was (and is ) a good rifle to begin with, and let me compete until I could afford a Codymatic Model '73 (Model 73s are so forgiving that I now can fire .45 Schofield in it and don't have to carry .45 Schofield AND .45 LC).

Whichever way you go, it might be good to start a 'kitty' for a slicked up used Model '66 or '73  ... that way when someone is selling theirs (which seems to regularly happen) you will be able to pick it up ....

It's just the nature of '94's to be loose and sloppy.  If it's ugly, worn blueing, etc, you might consider having it reblued.

Or Keep it as a hunting/backup rifle ... I am guessing that what you would spend rebluing that Model  94 would probably get you a third of the way towards a brand spanking new Winchester clone .....
