A FINE EARLY CDV OF CURICATA, UTE CHIEF (Check Out Spectacles on Top Hat)

ca 1877, with W.G. Chamberlain's Denver, Colorado Territory imprint and Ute Chief/ Washington/ (Father of his Country) written on verso. Curicata poses wearing a top hat, peace medal, and Navajo first phase blanket around his waist. In his hand he holds his sheathed rifle.

Curicata was a Ute chief whose twin brother, Ka-ni-ache, was active in signing several treaties that ultimately moved the Utes to the western reservation of Colorado. At this point, Ka-ni-ache became a subsidiary to the famed Ouray (Thrapp 1988:759).
