With Baker and Johnston's imprint on verso and a portrait of Chief Washakie with group of his head men surrounding him. Washakie sits in center and holds his rifle and pipe, taken ca 1880.

Washakie (ca.1804-1900), a Shoshone chief was a lifelong friend to whites, assisting travelers and troops through his treacherous homeland terrain. In 1876, he joined forces with the military as both a scout and warrior and served under Gen. George Crook pushing Crazy Horse into the Powder River Country. He was praised by President Grant and Arthur, and buried with full military honors.

I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I require the same of them."
