Grapeshot

I've got one of the Shiloh .50 cal Percussion 1863 Cavalry Carbines.  My paper or linnen cartridges are formed on a mandrell that allows me to use a small square of eyeglass cleaning tissue formed over the end of the mandrell and the paper or linnen tube glued around it so I have a flat end on the cartridge.  I then pour in a .o8cc dipper full of 4Fg and then the main charge of either Pyrodex or 2Fg and slide a .50 cal bullet on top of that and seal it with Testor's model airplane glue.  The cartridge fits the chamber flush so when the breech block comes up it doesn't tear the cartridge and the flame from the cap pierces the tisue and ignites the 4Fg which, in turn, ignites the main charge.

Iv'e used the same technique substituting APP for the Black Powder/Pyrodex.  I plan to try 777 in it this fall.
Listen!  Do you hear that?  The roar of Cannons and the screams of the dying.  Ahh!  Music to my ears.

Grapeshot

Yep, like Grapeshot I bought one of the Farmingdale Shiloh's in .50 Caliber back in 1980 when Dixie Gun Works had them at $400.-.

The fun part was making the nitrated linnen cartridges out of old sheets.  Just cut the sheet into pieces big enough to fit in a deep rectangle cake pan and pour a super saturated solution of water and potasium nitrate over them and let them sit for a couple of hours.  Pull them out and let them drip dry over the tub over night and store them in a air tight ammo can after they are dry.

Cut them to length and width and form them over the shaping mandrel and glue the ends using Testor's model glue from the tube.

These are a lot stronger than the paper tube cartridges.
