I was shooting my 56-50 Spencer this afternoon, levered it open, and the whole breech block assembly kinda swung out the bottom...? I pulled the lever screw, reinserted the block assembly, turned the screw back in, and shot it a few more times. How the heck did this happen?

the triger plate engages in the groove in breachblock if this is worn or loose it will alow the action to over travel in my early AP spencer this was a big problem, you can fix it by puting a shim between uper and lower block but it will eventuly hapen again proper wat to fix it is to build up the block stop (the rounded bit on front of triger plate) with hard weld thed grind it to proper shape,on my new rifle this problem seems to have been fixed,so if yours is a new one it probly is the triger plate screw come loose

Another cause of this is if the upper block drops too far down in the lower block. This can be fixed by soldering a shim in the lower  block to stop the upper from dropping down too far.

I just cut a 3/4 round shim out of an old credit card and slid it around the breechblock post, holding it between the block and carrier.

I shot it in a CAS match today, then turned out a steel shim (looks a lot like a thin washer...) to put around the post when I got home. It shot fine at the match, but I was careful not to open it too forcefully.

My stage times went from the mid-30 second range to 90+, and my finish went from the top third of the pack to second to last. :D On the other hand, I'm pretty sure I had a lot more fun than anybody else. ;D
