Yesterday I finally got my original Winchester 87 10ga to the firing line.  This is a fun gun to shoot and it gathers a crowd to watch.  I load a stout load of FFg black powder under a good payload of shot using Circle Fly wads.  The gun seems to shoot and handle well.  I'm still learning to load it, but I did get the bonus flyer.

The barrel has been chopped and is quite pitted.  I'd like to replace the barrel, but I don't know where to look for a replacement.  So, if any of you has a decent 10ga 87 barrel laying around, please let me know.

Also, the hammer spring has been welded.  I'd like to replace it but I don't know if any of the Chink Chester springs will fit or if there are any originals to be had.  I suspect a 12ga 87 hammer spring would fit.

Thanks,

Or give Lonnie at Run N Iron a call. He might even have an extra barrel sitting around the shop from a parts gun. He can definately set you up with a spring, even if he has to make it.

I'd love to see that one Dick.  I wish I had a 10 gauge mosquito fogger for our summers in the southern part of the Republic of Texas.

I would try to replace the welded spring above all else.  A friend of mine who does amazing TIG work tried it once.  On an '87 as it happens, and it didn't take long before the spring went sproing.  I guess the heat treat he tried didn't go well.

I am in the same boat but with a 12g. I emailed Coyote Cap and awaiting a response.

Find a 10ga single barrel, have the stub cut off, threaded and chambered for the 10ga 87/01 design.  You already have the thread pitch and length
From the looks of the patent diagram, it's just a threaded barrel with a bottom angle cut for the extractor

You might want to call Numrich and ask them what they have in 30" single 10ga barrels.  Ask them for the barrel OD and go from there

Thanks Pards,

I printed out the patent images and will take this project to my gunsmith for a winter project after Whitetail season here.  It indeed does look like a new barrel can be installed.  I'm also thinkn' that a new 12ga hammer spring will work.

Could be this old girl will see plenty of action.  I'll shoot it some more this fall till shootn' season quits here in Wisconsin just south of the Glacier. .
