Greetings Paladin
on a BP cylinder there may not be an overabundance of material so I would avoid polishing - however one might be able to burnish the edges of the scratch so as to minimize the visibility, followed by judicious bluing .....

Hey PUK, I had a similar problem with the Walker I rescued from a non-clued up,,,,,umm,,,,person who had scratched up the cylinder (with what looks like a screwdriver).
They were too deep to rectify in any normal way so I just applied plenty of cold bluing and cured it with plenty of oil.
They are hardly noticeable now.
(Not that anyone gets that close to a Walker in full flow,,,65grains of Holy Black keeps the wimps away!!!

In the past, I have covered up scratches by peening the ridges down with a polished face of a small ball-peen hammer.  I lightly tap it dowm then a bit of cold blue to camoflage the damage.

Greetings Sir Charles -

I think that Proper Burnishing is a little understood and underutilized method to alleviate scratches . I learnt it whilst assisting my Lovely Spousal Unit with her work on hard Sterling Silver Jewlery. Occasional scratches or sharps places would occur and the silversmithing books I have all recommended burnishing to smooth the metal back into place with a Hardened Steel Burnishing tool.

In essence, the concept is the same as that utilized in fine white metal smithing (as opposed to blacksmiting) and is actually quite similar to peening in concept. Most folks understand Peening , the pressure needed to move the metal is provided by striking, but is less controlled and faster. When Burnishing the work must be held most securely as the pressure is provided only from the strength of the operator, but the smoothing action is very controlled and slow. If one were to think of mending a scratch in a moist clay statue, one can see the advantage in a smoothing versus a percusive action. Interestingly I was also taught to burnish my traditional arrow shafts, and my clay pots (once dried to "leather hardness") prior to firing.

I have also found that burnishing, being slower, provides for fewer mistooks and provides a more harmonious outcome.
