Howdy,
I had the good fortune of attending my first cowboy Action shoot a few weeks ago. While there I noticed a Gun Cart made by Rugged Gear set up for Cowboy Action Shooting holding three guns. While I don't shoot this sport yet, but I do shoot Civil War era weapons in competition (1855 Springfield and 1860 Henry). Does any one have one of these carts and how does the gun box fit in the cart? What size gun box fits the cart? How well is this cart suited for the sport?

I really dislike it when I have a basic question and no one answers me.

The truth is that there used to be gun cart plans for the taking on the internet. Now they are all downloadable for as little as six sawbucks and two bits......

Just do a search for 'Cowboy Gun Cart Plans'

Best of luck .....

While I have not used a Rugged Gear cart, I can tell you they are catching on like wild fire in my neck of the woods.  There is a new model (compared to the one you report seeing) which holds the guns vertically rather than in a 'laid down' position that the original three gun cart employed.  Much more SASS friendly -- lots of old farts get grumpy if muzzles are pointed any direction other than up.  Looks like there's a lot of real estate on the new four gun cart.  Pockets, crannies, and a big, open tub that forms the main compartment of the cart.  They look like they're effortless to move and steer.  One of my pards now has his wife driving the gun cart and she doesn't complain.

There is no place to sit on the cart and it doesn't appear to be strong enough for that purpose.  Neither is there provision for an umbrella, but that might be rigged somehow.

Here's the link to the new model: http://www.ruggedgear.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=194/category_id=-1/home_id=-1/mode=prod/prd194.htm

Hope this helps.

Infernal Combustion

I have the Rugged Gear 3 Gun cart.  There is no provision for a gun box, although you could probably make a small one that would fit on it's shelf.  The cart is made of nylon with aluminum tubing, so there really isn't any "solid" place for much of anything.  No umbrella holder, no place to sit, and no shelf for holding your ammo while you restock your loading block.

That said, I love mine.  It is light, maneuverable, has a parking brake, and no-flat tires.  It carries everything I need to carry and is built well.  I will say I would have probably bought the new 4 gun cart had it been available, but I like my Rugged-Gear cart.

I had one made for me when my hand and shoulder were on the mend, Bill Bower made it and his business is Oak Tree, he does nice work to say the least, the cart breaks down for easy transport, there are three detachable boxes, and the handle and rifle back stop remove too, I have an umbrella holder and a beverage holder, I opted for the over sized wheels, which allows me more angle to tilt the cart back without bottoming out, the inside is lined in green felt as is the bottom too, which I did myself.

First, thank you to everyone that responded. I have a cart now that was converted from a hand cart I brought from Sam's quite a few years ago. This is not one that can be folded up though. I was looking for one that can be folded up and weights less than the present one that I can stow in the motorhome.

Question for  Infernal Combustion What size gun box will fit in your cart? I like the 4 gun one, but am unsure if everything will fit.

Thanks again for all the comments.

The carts I have seen and from what others have said there are no complaints about the lack of space for everything needed to shoot a match. From this page it looks like there is a lot of room. Rugged Cart Details Click on more details

I'm getting the 4 gun cart soon, I dropped the "big" hint to my wife that I want one for my birthday next month. We normally have a deal that I get "permission" to get the gift I want. If she doesn't remember, I'll buy it the day after my birthday anyway.

I saw the Rugged Gear 4 gun cart at a shoot this past weekend.  It looked really nice, and had more room than my 3-gun version and held the guns much more upright.  I talked with the owner and he said it was OK, but the main axle and wheels were a bit flimsy on the 4 gun and the parking brake didn't work worth a darn. It also didn't have the "no-flat" tires (although I think you can order them as an option).  He thought the 3 gun cart was made better than the 4 gun.

To answer Virginia Drifter's question (sort of), I'm not sure what you mean by "gun box".  There is sort of a shelf in the cart that Rugged Gear supplies a "cooler" and "ammo bag" for.  I'm not sure of exact dimensions, but the "footprint" of each would be less than 8" x 10" (probably closer to 9" x 7").   The Rugged Gear cooler bag holds 4 cans of soda and the ammo bag will hold 6 50 round MTM 45 LC ammo boxes and two 25 round boxes of 12 ga. shells.  I would guess that if you wanted to make a wooden box to hold ammo and accessories the footprint would be about the same dimensions of your average magazine give or take an inch or two.  Since the long guns are at an angle in the cart, you couldn't make it very high - probably not much more than 6 - 8 in. depending on the guns you use.  That is sort of the problem with the three gun cart from Rugged Gear - the long guns kind of lay over/on top of all your other supplies.  That did was not a problem with the 4 gun cart - access to your supplies looked easy.

Drifter, I've had my 3 gun Rugged gear cart for about a year now. Several of the negatives that were said about it can be over come. Go to any on line Golf supply and buy the unbrella holder that is meant for a golf cart. Take a 1x8 p[iece of board, put two dowel  pieces in the edge and support it on the edge of your gun carrier and you have a loading shelf. For a place to sit, hang a three legged stool from the cart and open it up when you want to sit. Extra ammo A large bag or even the carpet bagger bag will fit in the lower compartment. Loading, sitting, shade, and storage all solved. If you want a place to sleep, stand by I'm working on it. Later David

I'd love to see a pic of your loading shelf.

Me Too!

By the way, I have often wondered how one of these 4-gun racks might work on a folding golf bag cart as a basic gun cart...........

Has anyone tried this?

I received a the special 4-gun cart from Rugged Gear for my birthday from my wife. I have used it for 3 shoots and it works great. Plenty of room and easy to maneuver around on all types of terrain. I can easily haul 6 long guns if necessary and that will happen occasionally. The little cooler doesn't hold enough for me so I bought the larger cooler bag and a folding stool. Holds up to 300lbs comfortably. I'm about 275 and sitting on the stool is comfortable.
