I just scored a new to me Consew 227.Cyl arm sewing machine.
It has a 3 phase motor so that has to be replaced.
Looking around I have 2 options.  The motor and clutch just like they all have been for years. Or a servo motor that is adjustable. It can be set  to a stitching speed and it wont go any faster.
My question is does the servo motor have the stones to start out in leather,or will it need a rolling start.
Ive never used a servo motor. I have always used clutch style.

Devil,

A servo motor is normally hooked up to another motor and alters it voltage according to the main motor, you should try to get a motor that is the same horsepower as the three phase that you are removing, the amperage may be the limiting factor in this however.  Most sewing machines have a foot petal or a knee control that is a rectifer that limits the voltage and the speed of the motor.  I hope that this helps you with what you need, if not please post more and I will try to help.

Welcome to the forum Devil Anse Hatfield, I wish I could help you with this, but I hand sew only at this time, but we have several Pards that have machines that will probably chime in, and they have the knowledge to help you, I see you already heard from Old Top.

Howdy, Pards,
It's been so long (about 16-18 years) since I bought my Juki TSC441 (the base machine for the Ferdco 2000 or somesuch), and I can't see what kind of motor is on there, but you might contact Hoffman Brothers, in Rosemont, Illinois (www.hoffmanbrothers.com), which is where I bought the whole shebang!  What I wanted was the ability to get a single stitch per tap on the foot pedal, as well as the ability to do the first or many stitches semi-hand-crank.  The motor and controller is more than adequate to go through at LEAST two or three layers of 12-14 oz. leather, though I seldom do more than a couple of thickness of 8-9 oz. (Just works out that way.)  I can handcrank by means of a LARGE flywheel/handwheel.  It is 14 inches in diameter, with a smooth surface.  There is a switch on the motor housing that changes the needle starting position from needle up to needle down. I start needle UP, most of the time, however.  This machine has a mechanical reverse lever, BTW.

I'm sure they can help you out.

Ride easy, Pards!

Howdy DH,
And welcome to the forum! You realy don't have to change the motor if you don't want to. Do a goggle search for Phase Converter, I don't know how much they cost, but it will let you 2 phase instead of 3 phase!
Hope this helps!

Tried the Phase converter route.
The problem with that is, A phase converter robs horse power from the motor. At 1/3 of horse sewing machine has no power to rob a phase converter would only work if i had  a bunch of them  to run at once. Unless I buy a rotary converter, which  costs much more than new  motor for machine .

It looks like the pards here have you steered in the right direction.

This is one helpful bunch of friends. Welcome to the forum.

Devil,

If it is a 1/3HP motor you can replace it with a 1/2HP that operates on 110V and you should be able to use the same controls.  Check RPM and make sure the replacement motor is the same.

My Ferdco Pro-2000 came equipped with a DC servo motor.  I can set the desired speed with a knob and it stays at that speed.  It will start off in heavy leather without having to give it a push.  I am considering upgrading to  a DC servo motor with needle setting capabilities

Me Again.....

Check out the Ferdco web site and the Artisan web site.  They both offer DC Servo motors.  Artisan has two models that have needle positioning capibilites.
