Spencer 44 extraction Problems
« on: July 05, 2009, 11:04:16 AM »
I've read the other suggestions about the problems with the paddle extractors in the 44 Russian Spencer. I have had problems with one extractor catching the cartridge midway and the other actually extracting. The result is a bound spent casing.

I finally took the entire carbine apart (except the cartridge tube). the tube had rough edges in the receiver which were honed with a stone. I noticed the left side extractor was not moving as smoothly as the right side. I honed the right side extractor and polished the surface until it moved in synch with the left side extractor.  After shooting it with 16 rounds yesterday, no extraction problems.

I planned on shooting many more rounds today. Of course it is raining cats and dogs.  >:(

I only have about 150 rounds through this carbine. I'm hoping it will smooth out with more shooting and become a reliable plinker.

Hi Shenandoah,

It has been suggested by others on SSS that another problem with the .44 Russian Spencer is that the cartridge itself is just too small to work smoothly with the .44 Russian Spencer "innards" resulting in feeding problems.  Hope you have corrected some of the problems you were having!

It's still pouring down rain in the Blue Ridge Mtns.  :P

I did cycle 40 rounds through the carbine on half cock. All fed as they should. I bought this caliber to go with my open top in 44 Russian. The honing seemed to help the extractors work in sync.

Years ago when the 44 and 45 Schofields came out with the dual extractors, some folks found that removing one (so it was single like the original) worked better.  I tried it on a schofield and it worked OK.

I tried removing the right side extractor. But sometimes the left extractor would slip off.  ???

So far the honing and fine fitting of the extractor seems to work.

I'm going to get a 50 cal (hopefully by Christmas). I bought the 44 when they first came out, I just haven't shot it until recently. It's a great plinking cartridge.

Try removing the left instead.  That is what I did.  Also VERY slightly tweaked it towards the cartridge.

Just a thought. On mine, the left side extractor has a 'lip' at the top while the right side does not. This seems to work very well.

Just an update:

After polishing the extractors and hand fitting them (one was slightly bent - probably when it jammed on a cartridge), it seems to work well. I shot about 50 rounds yesterday without a problem.  :D

I never did try removing the left extractor since it is now "working". It looks like there may be several solutions since every gun ios a little different.

Another update for those who have the same problem:

I shot about 300 rounds with the carbine over the past several weeks without cleaning. I use Universal Clays for the load. I had no problems with the gun at all.   ;D

The .44 Russian is a great plinker round.

 ;D Aw, Mossy.

I've shot BP for over 30 years. I got lazy cleaning the rifles (mostly muzzleloaders) and shoot it only about 30 times a year now.

I've always been a fan of the Spencers but until Taylors got the Armi's going in this country, I didn't want to pay the price for a shooter. I plan on getting a 50 Spencer around Christmas as an occasional shooter.

I just might have to shoot it with BP loads. 8)

Last shoot I decided to remove the stabler cutoff, bad move. One thing it did teach me was a good way to clean the action, & remove the right extractor. I have no trouble shooting 44 Russian 200 gr RNFP. I initially started with a flat point with a longer tapper, it didn't work at all.

Removed 1 1/2" spring from the magazine tube, now I can load & shoot nine shots.
