The entire theory of this type of grip design is that under recoil the entire gun is supposed to pivot back in the hand when fired, which is facilitated by smooth grips.  When you checker the grips, it prevents the gun from properly pivoting in the hand, and will actually put blisters on the hand from sustained shooting.

In other words, the grips are smooth for a reason.  You're not supposed to have a death grip on the pistol, but rather are to hold it just tight enough to keep it from coming out of your hand when fired.  It's not a 9mm or 1911.

Umm  OK   ;D thanks

A theory, in the general sense of the word, is an analytic structure designed to explain a set of observations. ...
An unproven conjecture , A theory is NEVER a fact, but instead is an attempt to explain one or more facts.

On the other hand, could it be a period correct method to embellish a pleasing presentation and a artful display of uniqueness.

I doubt,  I'd confuse my Remy with the Pistols you list  ;)
