 I thought that I'd pass this warning along.  Everyone that deals with the NET should know about it, but this is the first time it happened to me.  I can see how it would cause a lot of grief.   >:(

I an infrequent user of EBAY, but yesterday I got an email asking me to update my EBAY account with the credit card number, etc.  I forwarded it to EBAY and they said it did not come from them.

The EBAY reply included the following (copied from the reply):

"Important: eBay will not ask you for sensitive personal information
(such as your password, credit card and bank account numbers, Social
Security numbers, etc.) in an email. Learn more account protection tips
at::

I suspect that the same warning would apply to all commercial web sites.

Good Shooting and be safe!   :)

I too have received this fake EBay notice and sent a copy to EBay and received the same thing back from them.  I have also received this type of thing from other places.  They look very official and they all ask for personal information.  CC number, SS number and other information they could use against you.  I even got one with my bank header on it!  I sent a copy of that to my bank and they said it didn't come from them.  So it's a good idea if you get something like that....dump it.

I got an Email notice a couple weeks ago telling me that my Ebay account was being suspended due to abuse. The email also contained a link with which they were asking for my personal Ebay account information. Here's the Kicker I do not have nor have I ever had an Ebay account. I immediately contacted the Real Ebay and they confirmed that I did not have an account and that one had not been opened in my name by someone attempting identity theft. I then forwarded a copy of the email to Ebay's fraud department and to the fraud department of my ISP. There are a bunch of these email frauds out there many of them pretending to be legitimate websites, Banks, and ISP's. I get several bogus emails pretending to be banks and asking me to verify account information. Of course I don't have accounts with any of these banks so their emails are a dead giveaway.

Gents,

What you have experienced is an internet scam called "spoofing" or "Phishing".  The scammers send out masses of official-looking E-mails that look like they come from a bank, from Paypal, from Ebay, or whatever.  They are always worded pretty much the same - they tell you your account has been "suspended" or "limited" or is about to be suspended because they "can't confirm your information", and they give you a link where they hope you will fill in your name and credit card number.  Once they have these, they go on a shopping spree.

When they send you an E-mail about your Ebay account, they don't know whether you actually have an account there and they don't care.  They just want to fool you into sending them your financial information.  NEVER answer one of these E-mails, even if you have an account at the place it appears to be coming from.  Just delete them.  If your financial institution really needs some info from you they will send you a written letter, never an E-mail!

Please forward these types of emails to eBay or the bank they were supposed to come from. You can do a web search to find out if the bank name is legitimate. If it is forward the email to them. They have security people and the FBI who can track these scumbags down & put them behind bars where they belong. All major financial instutions and the FBI have special agents that do nothing but track down & apprehend web bandits. If they are tracked to a foreign country the FBI will contact Interpol and that countries law enforcement authorities.
