My moniker is my great grandfather's name. He served with the 2nd Florida Mounted Regiment in the Civil War. Afterward, he came home, packed his wife into a wagon, and was one of the first NorteAmericanos on the Frio River southwest of San Antonio ..... Kinda where present day Dilley is ...

It's possible I could show up. I'll present the idea to SWMBO and see what happens.

Vous pouvez voir par mes vĂȘtements que je ne suis pas un cowboy.

MUD MARINE

Will it be a superb event featuring Horse Marines or just a drab affair without Marines?

The event went well.   :)

As to "drab" or "superb" one of the chief organizers is a retired Marine.  The owner of the Ranch is a former Marine.  Does that count?!?!?!?!   :D

We even had a taste of real authenticity for the Spanish-American War types.  If it wasn't raining it was hotter than Blue Blazes.  Kind of like, maybe, Cuba or the PI.   ;D

The National Cavalry Competition is set for 23-27 September 2009 at Ft. Robinson, NE.  For details go to http://www.uscavalry.org/  We've sent in our money, made our reservations, and are working hard to get the mares in shape for the events.  If you've never been to Ft. Robinson it's one of the best preserved of the frontier forts.  It was also one of the major Army Remount centers.  It's now a state park with over 3500 acres available for riding, a buffalo and cow herd, etc.

The goal of these events is not "authenticity" or "living history" but rather an attempt to keep alive the equestrian traditions of the U.S. Army.  The Ft. Riley System was, perhaps, the best all round riding method ever devised.  We have gaited horses (Mangalarga Marchadors) and the system works very well.  I've also seen Walkers, Rackers, Spotted Saddle Horses, etc. at these events using the Ft. Riley System and it works for them, too.  And, of course, the the TB type horse which was the bedrock of the Army Remount system.

So if you can come out and join us then please do so.  Even if you don't ride, the parties are really good!!!   8)
