I know with out looking at the gun an opinion is hard to give.
I've found a Parker and sons 10 ga. double.
The condition, locks up tight ,wood is in pretty good shape, locks are nice and tight and crisp,
has new firing pins.
The only problem I can see is heavy pitting for about 2" infront of the chambers the rest of the bore is ok.
The pits would be to deep to hone out.
The gun was manufactured 1897 so not perfect.
The person is asking $300.
Does that seem a bit high with the pitted bores?

If it is Damascus/twist steel barrels it is.  Any of these with pits are not safe to shoot at all.  The rust can creep into the welds.

Hi Del.
I beleave it is steel NOT damascus.
But that is one thing I will check to be sure.

I found out it is damascus and he will come down in price a bit.
It is pitted bad enough that I'll have to think on it awhile.
The person who has it is a gun smith and said BP rounds would be OK but nothing else.
I want a shooter not just a wall hanger.

I would not do it, one can never tell how far the rust has went into the welds.  You might get away with it, some have, but I wouldn't, I'm ugly enough as it is.

I think I would agree with you Del.
Not the ugly part, the rust part. ;D
I'll keep looking.

"Briley" could probably put one of their insert tubes in the 10ga. and make it a 12 ga. :o  That's what Briley does...makes shotgun bore tubes to shoot smaller ga. shells in a larger ga. gun.

Dick Dastardly

Howdy Rifle,

That sounds like a quite heavy 12ga.  For $300 and the smith work it would also be spendy.  I'd keep on lookin'.

Not sure you can even go from 10 to 12, more likely from 10 to 16.

The last time I checked the Briley web site, they did not list any tubes to convert a 10 gauge.  Sometime this year.

Folks that blast a 10 ga. in CAS have trouble getting in touch with thier feminine side.  Your deltoid muscle was never built for such trama.  I know a couple of people who do it with black powder and almost everyone I know avoids being on thier posse.  No ear protection the wolrd will protect you from the muzzle blast......Not  for me,  but your milage may vary and it still is a free country, last time I checked.

Now, there you go Cohagen.  Here I just got me a fine, new to me, original Winchester 87 10ga back from my gunsmith with a new pivot pin and big brass front sight.  I've got some fine BP ammo loaded up for it and was lookin' forward to makin' smoke with ya down the trail.

FWIW, I'm using the same charge bar that I use for 12ga.  I shortened the hulls on the band saw and finished the loads with a nice roll crimp.  Cute lil fat shotgun shells they are, I'm tellin' ya.

Yer rite tho.  For reasons I can't explain they seem to beller louder out of that 10ga pipe then they do out of my 12ga guns. ;D

P.S.  I'm intending on camping at Fandango.  Hope to see you there.  Silas, PD 'n me will be in the big PC canvas tent again.  I'll be doin' the DD Bullet Casting Workshop on Friday.

If Briley makes the inserts they are 600 plus.  There is a guy in England who can sleeve the barrels back to 10 ga but the last price I saw was over 3K.  Unless the Parker is high grade which at $300 it most likely is not, it is not worth the messing with.  If you have your heart set on a Parker there are lots of good ones out there for $1500 or so.
