Howdy Cowboy
If you put in a stitch groove on the plug it will help.

I did a leather project once, not too long ago,i traded a box of brand new good leather makin stuff to Slim for a holster he made for my Rogers and Spencer gun ;D He did it from a tracing too.Wished i could get a piece of leather from all the crafters. So far Ned Buckshot,Slim,Doc Disaster.I forgot to add Dave at Cochise Leather :)

Rick, TW is right. Start on small stuff and work up as you get comfortable. He's also right about it being addictive. Once you get started, there just doesn't seem to be any turning back. :D That's a fine holster. Very authentic.

Cowboy, when I punch my holes, I use a longer awl than I normally use because it's easier to see the angle you're going to get before you start. I've also punched the hole from both ends when the awl just doesn't seem to want to go where I want. Go slow and watch for the tip of the awl to just start through. You can often make minor adjustments or punch the other direction at that time. As always, practice is your best friend.

Slowhand Bob

Cowboy316, there is nothing wrong with the Dremel, for some.  I can not get decent holes on a main seam with a dremel but must concede  that I have seen others who could easily do the toe plug.  Im not sure if it is a natural talent or just lots of practice?  The way I do toe plugs is very weird, slow and pain staking so just practice the right techniques and you will only improve beyond my efforts.

JD Alan

Johnny McCrae does an incredible job of punching holes with a dremel. I've seen examples first hand, and I can't make them look like that.

Cowboy, I would recommend Bob Douglas for an awl. I met him at a leather show last year, and got to see his stuff up close. I bought a haft and two blades from him. They aren't cheap, but a good awl is very important.

If you Google Bob Douglas, comments about his awls will pop up. That's a pretty good indicator of the quality right there.

Good luck JD
