How are the front sights fastened on the '72 OT? Mine shoots so high I was hoping I could install a taller front.

I'm not sure about the OT.  My Pietta 1860 required a higher front sight.  I watched the smith pull the original off using heat and vise-grips, from a shallow lengthwise slot.  A new blade was fitted & soldered in.  Dennis left me a lot to practice my sight-filing skills.

On my Navy & R-Ms I had small dovetail sights installed, but there is more metal for the slot.

I don't know about the 1872 OT but my Uberti RM Army from the same production period 2002 had the front sight glued and press fitted by the factory. Had to replace the factory sight a couple of years ago when I lost it during recoil, no big deal with 2 component epoxy and a bit of heat cure. The new one sits solid like a rock now.

The very first '72 OT's that came out in 1999 had the same original height front sight as the orginals. Well, just like the originals they shot high. All '72 OT's since circa. 2000 and later have a taller front sight I believe.

The load you're using determines where it shoots as well. You can regulate BP loads by switching brands and by using FFFg or FFg. If using smokeless you're on your own.

Thanks guys. I will fool with some different loads and do lots of practice, it'll come around OK.

BTW, FCK, My OT was made in 2008 and has a low sight, at least it seems low to me, just 3/16" tall.

Hopefully, Abilene will chime in here with some info from Cimarron.

Abilene

All the OT sights I can recall seeing seemed pretty low.  I haven't paid enough attention to know if they have varied over time or not.  I've posted this pic before, but as a point of reference you can look at the sight on this one: OT Number 1  - the first Opentop made by Uberti, s/n X01.  The repros don't come any older than that  :D

I have serial #X071 bought in Sept. '99 after the deluge that was after their introduction at the '99 Shot Show. EVERYONE wanted one then. I believe this is out of the first shipment sent to the States. I replaced the sight with a taller one circa. 2000 as Harvey Lane at Cimarron then told me that all successive ones would have the taller front sight. This gun has more than 10,000 BP rounds through it and is still tighter than a drum.  ;)
