The Holsters in Outlaw Joses Wales????

Howdy Fella's,
  Sunday I watched the movie Outlaw Joses Wales for the 10th time or so, I paid close attention to Clint's holster he had on, I was wondering if that was a period looking rig!! I wasn't sure if the holsters that he wore were some type that they used back then??? If you don't remember what they looked like, they look like they are period correct open toed slim jims that were made for 4 3/4" barreled pistols because his long barrel pistols stick out of the bottom of them, he wore them strong right and strong left.  Was this a common practice back then, or was that just done for the movie??

This was a really basic pair I made back in the spring.  http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,26453.msg347921/topicseen.html#msg347921  Not exact copies but close enuff with light oil and no top coat or sealer.  Slim Jims are appropriate to anytime period that we think of as the old west and how a pard wore them would have been based on the individual.  Look to WB Hickocks method of carry or Wes Hardins, both very different and personal preferences to methods of being a two handed shootist.  Their preferences make the standard grip to rear right/left or cross draw styles seem common.   These two represented a truly rare breed (ala Josey Wells), in that they were actually two handed shooters while the guys carrying two guns, with one being cross draw, were one handed shooters carrying two guns.

Yup you hit that on the head! If those holsters were about 1 1/2" shorter they would be dead ringers!! I just wasn't for sure that the pards of the old west wore a holster that the barrel stuck out so much!

Not sure how accurate, but I seem to have read somewhere that the holsters were basicly cut down and slightly modiefied cavilry holsters, which would explain why the 9" barrels were poking out so much.  Something someone would have stiched together around a camp fire.

I did make a pair like them, at least my version, wide belt, and I used an acylic sealer, can't remember the name of it off hand, but I don't normaly use it for leather work.

We are having a big Christmas match over in Columbia, SC this weekend and I have filled a box with most of my leather experiments and other stuff I do not use with the idea of trying to sell and make room for new.  Somewhere along the way I posted a photo on here of the one I made for my personal Walker, personalized.  Realistically I will not buy another Walker, so the whole set of Outlaws will be offered, sans actual knife, at fifty for the three pieces of leather.  Though this is very close to what I picture as being worn by a post CW Raider, lets face it, there isnt much to it when factoring in 3rd rate leather quality!

PS: No secret attempt to sell here as I would gladly post the pattern for anyone and you can make your own pair from much better leather than I used.  If I made another pair, they would be shortened to just below the rams curvature more like the movie version.
