Any of you every antique a USFA Rodeo ? Looks like the matte finish would lend itself good to antiquiing ?

I've pondered a USFA,,,and I think I'd like to antique a Rodeo,,,maybe even more than going the extra for a Single Action. Antiqued finishes beg to be used, while the wonderful case and blue of the more finely finished ones,,,well,,would beg me to 'be gentle.

What's ya'll's thought's on 'age'ing' a Rodeo ?

Marshal,

A number of us have.  The late Longshot Logan posted on SASS net how to antique a SAA.  If you can't find it pm me I have a copy.

By the way here are mine antiqued.  http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c105/BlueViffer/pictures076.jpg

Your guns look great, 100% better than that mat finish they came with, they have the look of well used sixguns now, I've always liked the way old guns show the wear on the metal, and patina they get with age, you have really ACED this look, WELL DONE Pard.

Johnny D., thanks hoss,,them are some FINE lookin' Rodeos ! You are dead on with your ageing on thoses. Believe this is how I'm gonna go. I bet a pair of well antiqued tru-ivories would be just too dang bad on an antiqued Rodeo SAA.

Thanks again,

I polished this one with Flitz. Not exactly antiquing, but I like it.

Great way to DIY and get the same look as the Gunslinger w/o the extra$$$. ;D

Snake River James

I stripped the matt finish and antiqued mine using a combination of plum brown and various cold blues.  I did not antique the hammer.

Marshal Deadwood

Looks dang good, Snake River.

I got nerve to do a Model P just recently, and I liked it. Wouldn't be afraid to tackle a Rodeo now...

Nice grips ya got on there too.

Snake, beautiful job pard, I wouldn't do one more thing to it, it's right where it should be, and like the others those stags are dang nice.

Snake,

I second tENwOLVES opinion.  Like the look and the grips also.  Did you do two or just the one?  Glad to see others doing this to their Rodeos.

I know I have said it and it has been said on this forum many times, but this is the way to basically get a "Gunslinger" with out having to pay extra you can do yourself to a Rodeo.  Nice job BTW.

Thanks for the kind words.  The grips are an old set of stag I got off Ebay.  I lucked out and got them at a really
cheap price.  They are perfect for this Rodeo.  I spent some time on this antiquing job.  It was done with a mixture of BC Plumb Brown, mostly applied with a spray mister, and various cold blues.  Different brands give different colors.  The pic below shows an English halfstock flinter I recently built.  The lock was "faux" case colored using a single application of Van's cold blue.  This blue mimics case colors when first applied.  Additional coats just even it out and turn the colors blue.  It's really more mottled than the picture shows; the pic came out a little too solid blue.  With the Rodeo, I just used different blues to darken recessed areas (that receive less wear).  Small amounts of blue were applied with Q tips.  I just did it unti I liked the result.
