I see there's alot of 22 inch 50/95 owners out there. I was wondering if you could tell me about your short rifle
I'm thinking of buying one also. Recoil, I own 2 50/90 Sharps so I know a little about recoil.
Thanks :)

I can't speak about the 22" barrel version, but I can discuss recoil with the 28" barrel.  Recoil is not bad at all.  There is a big difference between a .50-95 and a .50-90.  Bullet weight of the .50-95 is typically 300-350gr.  As you well know, .50-90 bullet weight can range from 450gr up to 700gr plus.  This makes a huge difference in recoil.  I shoot an 1868 model .50-70 trapdoor with 70gr FFG and a 425gr bullet and it kicks more than my .50-95 with 83gr FFG and a 343gr. bullet.

I am considering having my 28" barrel cut down to 24".  I just don't need the length, weight and mag capacity of the long barrel.  24" seems like a very well balanced size.  I'd expect a little more felt recoil, but I wouldn't expect it to be objectionable.

ndnchf - I did the very same thing you are contemplating, only on a 45/75. I cut it down to 24", and I really don't notice much difference in recoil. It IS a lot easier to carry around now. I launch 350 gr. projectiles, so that's pretty close to what you use in your 50/95. Aside from losing a little nostalgic authenticity, I don't regret it one bit.

DB - I read your thread on cutting your rifle down, that's what got me thinking about it.  I can't recall if it was in your thread or another I looked at, but someone posted a photo of a factory special order original 24" barreled '76.  It really looked nice and well balanced.  Since a 24" barrel could be special ordered from the factory, it would still be authentic to me.

I contacted Cody Conegher at the Cowboy shop.  He can do the job at a very reasonable price with a 2 week turnaround.  Very tempting ;)

I think Rowdy Fulcher picked one up from Cimarron already cut to 24". Something about an error when cut, but they could order it that way, IIRC. Not sure how long the wait would be. Contact him if you are interested in that route.

That was correct about me getting a 24 inch barrel from Cimarron . I love this rifle it shoots Great you can see that on the Video .
If I had a 28 inch barrel I would have it cut down to a 24 inch . Was Joe Lansing the first to cut one down ???? on cascity .
