Hello Buffalohunter,
I have a 50-95 and a 45-75. Have'nt tried smokeless yet only black. Midway sells a set of mounts from Leatherwood/Malcolm for period style scopes. They take place of the rear sight dovetail and you have to remove the dust cover because you have to use the rail that the dust cover rides on. I have a set on my 45-75 and are going to put a set on my 73. The mounts have dovetails on them so you can use old Lyman or Unertl scopes, I use a Lyman 438 Field 4x. The mounts are soft steel and you may have to do a little filing on the dovetail mount itself so the scope mounts slide on easily, I had to do this to mine as they are a little oversized. Once I decide to have them permanently on the rifle I will have them case hardened. So far they have worked flawlessly. I think they sell somewhere between 35 and 40 dollars, Leatherwood also sells a 4x and 6x period scope.
