Anybody been shooing their '76 lately?  I have  ;D

I just got back from the range with my .50-95.  I tried some rounds loaded with 88gr by volume of APP FFG and the Mt Baldy 300gr bullet.  It shoots pretty well, but this powder seems inconsistent.  I can sometimes call my shots by the sound of the BOOM.  When they sound consistent, they will shoot into 3" at 50 yards.  But the group opens up with flyers now and then.  Grrrr  >:(  It seems to vary, yet my loading technique is very consistent.  Anybody else notice this with APP?  I'd like to try some Pinnacle, but haven't been able to find any locally.

Why don't you try some Swiss 1½?  It sure works good in my 45-75.  I use 76 grains instead of 75.  Lots of smoke, flame, boom and a hefty recoil and it is pretty darm consistent.   ;D

I have !  I've used between 77 and 80 gr of Swiss 1.5 with both the Lyman 515139 and the Mt Baldy 300gr bullet, both with good success.  I'm just playing around with different combinations.  I'm trying the APP just because is smokes well, has a nice boom and leaves almost no fouling.  The latter is a big plus with a cartridge that holds this much powder and a little bullet with minimal lube carrying capacity.  I've even tried lube cookies under these bullets with miserable results :'(

I figure these were hunting rifles back in the day.  Winchester expected owners to shoot a few rounds at time while hunting.  Not 50+ rounds at one time like we do today.  So back then they weren't too worried about fouling control.  Today its more of an issue.  Also, from what I've read, todays powders don't burn as clean as some fo the high grade sporting powders of yesteryear.  So I keep experimenting...any excuse to go shooting ;)

I have tried all the granulations of regular BP except 4f and I am steering clear of that stuff as I don't want the holy crap kicked out of me.  I tried that once with my 45-90 and found that 100 grains of that stuff fit nicely in the case but when I touched it off I got a bloody nose from the kick-back and jump.  Other than that, it worked fine.  I tried 60 grains of 4f in my big Walker and it had a worse jump than a 44 magnum so that is why I am not dumb enough to use 4f in my 45-75.  I really do like that Swiss 1½ and just got another 2 pounds of the stuff.  That 76 grain load is a good one--for me that is.  I read somewhere that some fellow had pulled a bullet from an original round and weighed the charge and it was 76 grains not 75--so--being a nut, I tried it and liked it.  Even in that heavy '76 it does pack a punch.  Just a few words worth of passing on.   ;)

I'll see if I can't make some thunder this weekend. Six of us are headin' up to the hunting land to shoot a little "just because"  :) I'll mainly be shooting the 44-40 SAA and 44 Spcl RM ll OT, but I am taking 40 rounds of 45/75 and 45/60 along too, along with the two '76's! I know fer a fact there will be SMOKE  ;D

The sun is starting to shine,  and the temperature is starting to rise.   People are out shooting .
That's my plan take my 45-60 and a couple boxes of ammo and smoke up the country side .

Rowdy:
Not me yet.  Too muddy in the barnyard in between snow and rain showers but there is hope as this is the end of March and my trigger finger has a powerful itch.  Got a bunch loaded up for my 45-75 with that Swiss 1½ to try with my chronograph.  Got a whole lot of 45-90 brass from Starline the other day and asked them again about 45-75 cases and they flat out said NO!   ;D

Put about 60 rounds through my'76 in 45/75 caliber last weekend during a weekend getaway with my sons and a few friends. They were impressed with the smoke and punch of those 325 grainers. Did manage to knock down a dead tree that had snapped off last year in the wind. Held pretty good groups at 75 yards - in the 2-3" range, off-hand shooting - I was concerned, as I had recently cut the barrel from 28" to 24". These were all triple-seven loads, but I had lubed them up with a crisco/beeswax mix, so not much crud to clean out....dang nice rifle - jes as good as my 45/60 model!  ;D

I'll keep an eye on that date Rowdy - might be I can shake loose and see ya'll in action. I've never been to any kind of CAS event - my former life was spent mostly with beltfed guns and military stuff. I've just recently (last year or so) gotten more involved with my BP interests. [and I'm glad I did!]

As far as You Tube goes.....Hadda sign on after seeing the great job you're doing in those video reviews for us - don't want to miss any future postings! :)
