Targets and target distances?

I've been looking at some of the stage descriptions in the "Stages" thread, and I notice that a good few of the stages there describe rifle targets being 25-35 yards away.

I've shot at a number of places now, and frankly, nothing is ever further than 10-12 yards.   As well, generally speaking it is: 10 rifle, 10 revolver and 4 shotgun with very little deviation (except sometimes 9 rifle instead of 10).

Why is that?

Personally, I'd prefer the targets be out further at times.

Also, it'd be awesome to sometimes have to engage a Texas Star, pistol/rifle pepper poppers, or even swinging targets!
Are there clubs that run things like this, and I just haven't encountered it, or am I uttering blasphemy?

Read SASS rule book and you will see the Max distance for rifle at 50 yds. Some clubs don't have the area for this. If you want to do long range then you came to the wrong sport. SASS is set up for" SPEED" and hits on close steel targets. I just finished shooting a two day 10 stage match with only 3 total misses and was beat in rank by a shooter with 28 misses!! Faster time ya know

Welp - bein' accurate whilst a-layin' on the ground with 2 holes in yer chest probly didn't count fer much in a gunfight :) Sometimes you just gotta be the fastest, and hope you hit sumpthin' I reckon..........oh well - them days are over.....

or are they?????

50 yards isn't long range for any rifle.

I'm not saying that should be the case, I'm saying a little diversity in stages would be worthwhile - some rifle targets at 20-50 yards would be worthwhile.   Not even always, even once in awhile would be worthwhile...

That can still be done for "speed".    Are we saying we can't hit rifle knockdowns at 40 yards fast?  The SASS rule book restricts rifle targets to be within 50 yards, so 20-30-40 yards would be legal, and every range I've been to could push rifle out to at least 20-25 within their berms.

Essentially, every match I've ever shot has pistol at 7 yards (or less), rifle at 10.   Nothing further.   You don't even need sights on the rifle at these distances.

You never know what you'll be up against at our club at any given match.  We shot at the Texas Death Star with pistols, rifle, and shotgun, with it set at different distances for each!  We've also got a little 3" tube that sits at an angle with a flip up flag for when you get a round down the tube.

That's awesome, that's what I'm talking about!

I haven't seen anything like that around here.

I'd love rifle targets a little further out, but a texas star with any of the guns would be awesome as well!

You should come and shoot a Hole In The Wall Gang or a Deadwood Drifters match sometime (or a Deadwood Boys W3G match). We've done all of these, and more.  We've also had ambidextrous and Southpaw-friendly stages every now and then, which is a real blessing for me.

Plus on occasion we have rifle targets out at the 50-yard maximum.  We once had a bonus-only rifle target out around 80-90 yards.  A hit gave a 5-second bonus, a miss didn't count as a miss.

There are five SASS EOT Champions who regularly shoot these matches, so come prepared to be amazed...

I'd love to come shoot with you guys sometime in the future, I really would like to do Western 3 Gun, as well as shoot stages as you described!

Thank you for your invite, and you guys have a great website there.

I was hoping there'd be something of a similar nature in Arizona, as driving to Piru monthly would be rather expensive!   ;D

Get involved with your local club, write or help write the stages, and help set them up.

   Try NCOWS

Unfortunately, there do not appear to be any NCOWS groups in Arizona either!   It's sorta odd, I'd think AZ would be a mecca for this.

That's always good advice.   I run a few matches of my own, however they're not CAS, but a different discipline.

I'm a little too new to any of the local clubs to be attempting to change anything on them, I was just hoping there was something out there I hadn't found yet in the area more inline with what I'm describing.

It does appear there are groups in this vein, but not in Arizona...

You might look at the Old West Shootist Assc. that shoots once a year at the NRA Wittington Center at Raton New Mexico.  Its a

great shoot, been there the last two years and going this year also.  Look at some of the photos of the stages, some shots

50-75 yds with a couple over a 100.  There web site is www.owsacas.com
