KEARNEY, Mo.: Black powder marksmen will shoot it out for braggin' rights and prizes, from 9 a.m. to high noon, Saturday, April 4, at the Jesse James Farm and Museum in Kearney. The black powder shoot, hosted by the Friends of the James Farm, a private support organization, is a fundraiser for the group, which supports the historic site.

"The Black Powder Shoot usually draws 30 or more contestants from Missouri and across neighboring states," Bryan Ivlow, shoot coordinator, said. "The shoot out is a fun event for visitors as well as contestants; it adds a sense of the Jesse James time period to a visit to the James Farm."

The Black Powder Shoot is a two-in-one contest that tests the skills of black powder shooters using cap-and-ball revolvers or frontier cartridge revolvers. Replicas of these revolvers are allowed. Fixed sights are required and participants will use the dueling stance only for the contest. Engraved Jesse James medallions will be awarded to the top three shooters. Shoot out registration is required. For more information about the contest, participants should contact Ivlow at 816-320-3426.

The event is co-sponsored by Clay County Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites. "Black powder shoots provide an excellent way for museum visitors to see the guns of the mid 1800s in action. Most contestants get into the spirit of the event including period style dress. Events like this always add interest for museum patrons enhancing their visit to the historic site," said Elizabeth Gilliam Beckett, historic sites supervisor.

On-site registration for shooters begins at 8 a.m. and ends promptly at 9 a.m. The fee is $15.00 and includes a one-year membership in the Friends of the James Farm. According to a promotional flyer for the shoot out, "this ain't no Tea Dance; it's an event!'" Therefore, period style dress is strongly encouraged for participants and guests.

For more information, contact Beckett at 816-628-6065. The museum is open daily and includes an audio-visual presentation, museum gallery, Farm home (the birthplace of Jesse James) and gift shop that offers a variety of historic games, Civil War era books and many other items and souvenirs. The historic site is located at 21216 Jesse James Farm Road, Kearney. Museum admission is $7.50 for adults, $6.50 for seniors and $4 for children age 8-15. Children under 8 are free when accompanied by an adult. For additional information and hours of operation, visit the Clay County website at www.claycogov.com.
