Most of the authentic holsters of the old west are not dropped.  I have found a few examples that have a slight drop.
Was wondering if any of you have thought about dropping your holsters a little.  Especially if it was correct to do so with examples of originals.
And have any of you seen other examples in other books.

The two I want to point out to you is Page 127 of "Packing Iron"  it has about a 1" drop.  Then on page 134 of "Packing Iron"  it has about a 2 - 2 1/2" drop.

Any way have a look at those two pages and let me know what you all think.

The ones you refer to aren't 'dropped' in the 'competitive' sense.

There are a myriad of these types - all differing by maker.

The holster of the time frame was designed to carry the piece in a secure manner and that usually meant 'deep' in the holster.

When they're carried in that manner - they're not readily conducive for a fast draw - they're doing the job of protecting and retaining the piece for a man on horseback.

There have been a couple of odd ball examples, such as the Commodore Perry rig, but for the most part lots of drop is not considered practical for normal use, then or now.  Without tie downs they flop about badly and tend to get an exaggerated tilt when sitting or bending, which can cause one to dump his gun.  St George is correct, few old west inhabitants were interested in a fast draw and the Buscedero rigs would not have caught on, even if available then.  Very few got to spend their day just walking the street ready to do a Hollywood style shootout with some kid looking to get a rep.  But Gawd I luv those story lines.
