Hi Y'all,

Since it was raining, I did my first action job on my USFA Rodeo this afternoon.  Stoned and polished everything I could get to.  Left the sear alone.  I used the Wolff mainspring (Brownells # 969-322-800) and Heinie trigger spring (Brownells # 394-630-000).  Tried to get in touch with Lee's Gunsmithing to try his spring set, but never could make the connection.  I finally decided NASA might be able to tell the difference, but I probably wouldn't be able to, so I went with Brownell's.

Definitely smooths up the action.  A positive and a real improvement.  I've got a couple of other Colts and USFAs I plan on slicking up soon.  Good experience I'd encourage others to try.

My next project for the Rodeo is a pair of faux ivory grips I picked up at a gun show.  Starting to think about antiquing it too.  Got some carpentry I have to get out of the way first though.

Digger,

How'd you prepare for this?  I know that's a loaded question, but I've disassembled my Glock, 1911, M92, and 10/22.  Even done some "action" work on the Glock consisting of buffing and polishing, but not a thing was taken apart until I read as many manuals and publications on the piece as I could.  Blame it on my shooting coach from HS and college.

So did you have a website with all the break downs or Kuhnhausen's book?

Thanks,

TF

Hi Y'all,

Gunsmithing:  Pistols & Revolvers, by Sweeney, has a short chapter.  Antique Firearms, by Chicoine, and Larry Crow's DVDs Customizing the Colt SAA, Colt Single Action Army, and Cowboy Action Gunsmithing, from Midway.  I have a recollection of miscellaneous web pages and mag articles that I can't go to right off.  Of course, nothing really preps you like a set of Wheeler screwdrivers and a Hail Mary.

Digger,

Well Done!!  The Lee's Gunsmithing springs are available from Brownells.

Before you get all prepped and ready to try "antiquing" that USFA ............... that flat finish is NOT bluing.
Getting it off is NOT ......... fun.
Usually, the result with a Rodeo is .......... well ....... less than satisfactory.
