Because we can't kill enough deer in this state to thin the heard to a manageble level, the DNR board is trying to come up with more ways to shoot 'em.  My bro, who is on the board, asked me what kind of rifles and calibers long range event shooters use, to possibly consider a season that alows them, or allow them for all the gun seasons.  Straightwall cases of over 40 caliber only.   So some of you guys who have Sharps, Rollers, or Stevens may have some new, fleshy, moving targets to aim at in the future.
This is only in the kickin' around stage right now, so don't get carried away.

I'd be thrilled if I could hunt more than the current ONE "gun-season" limit.
Of course we can use muzzle loaders and handguns during shotgun I and II...and I can get as many tags as needed for whatever quantity of  deer I'm interested in taking...but it means all the fun/work takes place in about 4 days.

As I currently see it, there is already an opportunity to use the buffler' guns during the January centerfire rifle season.....but, by then the deer are hard to find and the weather don't cooperate much.

Given all of my complaints, I would be pleased if additional options exist in the future.

Glad to see they're wising up over across the river, when you need to kill a lot of deer it's kinda dumb to force folks to use a bird gun. ::)

There have been some recent studies from back east that have been showing there are less accidents with rifles than shotguns, even in more densly populated areas.  Rifle riccochet less and as for some fool doing a sky line shot, does it matter if you hit someone 3 miles away or only a half mile.  Either is stupid.

Del, actually they're not. The Iowa DNR is now pretty much ran by Sierra Club ecologist types who are not great believers in hunting and sure enough they want to raise the out of state license fees AGAIN. I'm trying to sell my house and leave the state. Obama carried Iowa. Need I say more.  ::) ;)

I ended up talking to one of the DNR guys a few years ago about that.  The poor guy didn't believe me when I told him a shotgun slug would riccocet off the ground much worse than a high powered rifle.  Told him to set up some paper on a back stop and try it. ;D

The auto insurance companies have a big push all over to thin out deer herds, costs them a lot of money and it's helping in a lot of places.  NY State added more counties to the rifle legal areas.

With the performance of the modern muzzeloaders and the the new sabot slugs in shotguns I can't see
why we can't use the straight wall cases you're talking about. We can use a 45/70 pistol
(ouch) but can't use that round in a rifle. What is the accuracy of a 45/70 pistol (flinch)
and a Sharps 45/70. I would love to use my Sharps to hunt deer
