Unique and Important U.S. Patent Model for the Howlett Cartridge Box, Designed for the Spencer Repeating Firearms, ca.1866
Unmarked; with original U.S. Patent Office tags, the larger printed with "No." and "1865" and "Patented" and "1865." Accompanied by data written in ink. Full label reads on obverse only, as follows: No. 49,523 1865./Charles Howlett/Revolving/Cartridge - Box/Patented Aug. 22d/1865. Written in script, in pencil, at lower left of tag: Cartridge/Boxes and/Belts. Smaller label attached written in ink, script, obverse only; Charles Howlett/Cartridge Box/Recd June 19/1865. On left border of small label, 187 - 1.03 written in script; on right border, printed '6. Overall length of tin cartridge box 11-7/8 inches; diameter of approximately 2-7/8 inches at one end, and 3 inches at the other; larger end with tin spout measuring 1-1/8 inches in length and 3/4 inches in diameter. Cartridge box lid at spout end made of brass, and attached to box by round-headed steel screw and brass hinge.
