fired .38 cases stick between the ejector and the brass carrier.  With extra effot they will eject.  Unfired rounds do not show this problem.  I s this a simple ejector replacement problem or more????

Thanks in advance for any help

What kind of gun are you talking about?  If it's a 66 or 73 there is no ejector.

With limited info, it sounds like your cases are weak, being that they fall out unfired, then stick when spent.  Try some factory ammo just to see.  If the brass you are using is wore out it may bulging on firing.  Do you use a hot load?  Most spents should fall out without the rod.

Sokay, I had pistols on the brain an missed the huge clue about the brass carrier :-[  I've heard of this happening when 38s are used in a 357 carbine, not sure why but it seems to be perty common.

This may be totally off the answer you were looking for .
I have a Uberti 73 , no matter what I do to adjust the OCL it will not consistently chamber or eject 38 case .

I switched to 357 ( Starline ) and have had no problems what so ever.
Why ??
I have no idea but it cured my  problem.

Howdy Cohagen,
I think on another forum you mentioned that this was a 5 year old Codymatic and that it didn't used to have this problem.  Did the problem start all at once or slowly develop?  I'm sure cleaned under the extractor hook, yes?  Is it possible the little shelf at the bottom of the bolt face has broken off?

Noppe the face is fine.  The little prong is right where it is supposed to be.  I put in a new retracter and swiched carriers fropm another .38 rifle .  No luck.  Spent the day.  Looks like a trip to the gunsmith for me.  Thanks for the suggestions.

If the only thing you've changed before you had this problem is the brass; I'd look to the brass being the problem.  I have a '73 that the extractor will not grab the rim of Winchester brass when chambering - the bevel & tightness of the extractor will not ride over the rim; and a '66 that will not extract Remington brass - extractor rides over the rim but won't hold on to it to extract.  Both rifles work perfectly with Starline brass; so that's what I use.

It sounds to me like the rim diameter is causing the brass to bind between the extractor and bolt tab making it hard to eject.
