A question about edgeing?

howdy Pards,
I can't wait untill this winter is over!! My question is this, when useing your edgeing tool, I have noticed that edging on part of a certain peice it will edge good, and when edgeing cross grain, it will ball or fuss  up! My edgers are sharp, is there anything I can do to help, or am I doing something wrong?
See it has been a long time since I have asked a DUMB question, and i felt it was time!

As allways i will be very great full for any and all advice?

There are different styles and brands of edgers.  When I first started I only had Tandy edgers of different sizes.  Now I have a couple of different designs of Osborne edgers that I think work better.

That said, each piece of leather is different.  I have a favorite edger, but sometimes changing directions, or type of edger is necessary to achieve a desired result.  Sometimes, in a tight spot, I have to do a small section with a small exacto knife because I just couldn't get into a spot with any other edger.  I've also "borrowed" a couple of my wife's nail files to finish an edge that's hard to get to.

The quality of leather makes a difference, too. A good grade of leather will edge easily where some of the same hide from the belly area or a lesser grade hide may bunch up and cause irregular edges. I do what I can and clean it up with my knife if needed.

dampen the edge lightly, let it almost dry, use your edger...........99% of the time this will help.....

Also make sure your edger is polished as well as sharp.

WC, if you were to offer some advice on polishing up an edger I would be most obliged, JD

Take a piece of heavy kite string, hook it to your work bench. Rub it good with rouge. Pull it tight and
pul your edger through the string. Keep the angle right or you will dull your edge.
The pix attached has the edger held at a steeper angle for the pix only.
