Sgt Major Barber

Greetings all.

Can anyone direct me to a website that would show the pay scale for the Dragoons prior to becoming "cavalry" units at the outbreak of the civil war?  Or does anyone know off hand what a private solders' pay would be in late 1830s?

Many thanks.  I now have 95% of my "kit" for the 1866-1868 1st Cav Sgt. Major that I am going to be doin'.  Unfortunately, the $$, at this time, call for a replica Henry Rifle...one of the non-firing types, but am saving for a real one possibly later in the year.

My presentations will include the history of this guy and he started in the 1st Dragoons in the late 1830s.  Will get some pictures up here one of these days when kit is complete.

As always, thanks for any information you can provide.

I got a complete dress uniform for the mounted rifles Colonel of the 3rd Seminole War as Im in Florida.  The Confederate medical officer pants are almost the same thing.  I am now working on the 2nd Dragoon Colonel summer dress.  Found the Dragoon shoulder scales on Legendary Arms for $64.99.  I also found the Dragoon Officers belt buckle on USHistory.  The white summer pants I found on ebay at Mill Creek Merchantile for $55.00

Two Dot,

Contact Steve Allie, the Director of the Frontier Army Museum.  913-684-3767  9 am to 3:30 pm Central time.  The Museum is at Ft. Leavenworth and that was where the 1st Dragoons were stationed in the 1830's & 1840's.  I have been a volunteer in the Museum's living history program which portrays the period 1839 to 1851, both Dragoons and Infantry.  Steve can lay hands on the info that you are seeking.  Tell him that Bob Dorian sent you.  He probably won't hang up before you get your answer!! ::) :o ;D
