Is there a way to add a Stabler cut-off to my Spencer carbine? I ourchased mine from Dixie Gun Works about a year ago and will get to shoot it finally this Spring. I really like this carbine and think I have figured a way to shoot it really fast..............

the botom harf of breach block will have to have groove machined in it and a new screw made to hold cutoff S&S have cutoffs but the thread on screw is difrent, any comperdent machinist will have no trouble doing this ,i sugest you look at original an get measurments if posible

Parts are avail. from S&S Firearms. However, the hard part is finding someone to anneal the frame where it needs drilled. If it cracks......................... ::)

it is a simple job to anneal block you just have to mack sure they have a setup to reharden block, block has to be setup in rotary table and a ,.286inch slot .185 deep miled and sides of slot beveld, any well setup machine shop or gunsmith will have whots needed and wont find it hard to do

Herbert, those are almost impossible to find over here now. The days of the local machinist/gunsmith are gone. I know a gunsmith who cannot machine & a machinist who is not a gunsmith. If I were to have this done I have no idea who in the U.S. would do it. Besides, I wouldn't want a Stabler cut off as they loosen & flop around from what I've read.

Thanks so much for your input. I think maybe I better enjoy it just the way it is......................

the reason cutoffs come loose is wear on screw ither tread terning out can be fixed with locktight or wear on screw shaft, you are right obout them being a problem if they arnt set properly, the shooting i do says if no cutoff is fited than you have to youse magizine if cutoff is fited you can single load magizine is fine out to 100 but at 200 you need every edge you can get, that is why i fited a spercer cutoff to my military rifle original burncide spencer still has original stabler cutoff atached an still works fine but  i have seen a lot of spencers that were originaly fited with stabler cutoffs with cutoff no there most proberly taken of because it became loose, this can cause it to swing around when not wanted and jam action spencer cutoff fixed this problem but is only sucsfull in spencers with blade extractors ,lane extractor interfears with single loading

My Armi Sport in 56-50 has the lane extractor and I have had no problem single loading.
The balance of my group has the blade type in the Schofield cal and they can't single load unless
they take out the mag spring and drop the round down the back and work the lever with the muzzle
pointing to the ground. At least two of the lads are going to trade up the the 56-50.

i was refering to spencers fited with cutoffs fited and magizine in reserv the lane extractor stands high and makes it hard to single load if you have nuthing in mag it is the easist extractor style to single load, cutoffs make a difrence

Drydock

Just FYI, to single load with a blade type Spencer is quite easy.  Open to eject, then close the action until you feel the block hit the cartridge guide, its very distinct.  At that point, simply insert the cartridge into the breech and close the action.  You don't need to insert the cartridge all the way, half way is fine.
Civilize them with a Krag . . .
