I haven't gotten a 76 yet, but am laying the ground work so to speek.  Namely where to get the brass.  I would probably get one in 45-60 but the NWMP model only comes in 45-75 and for some reason that round appeals to me.

I've heard of reforming .348 brass and starline .50 alaskan.  Which would be better/best?  Mainly which rim dia. is closser to the original.  Also any idea how long before starline decides to make brass for this round?  I do like starline brass and they make some odd calibers.

Thanks

The 50 Alaskan is much easier (by the way 50 Alaskan and 348 are the same parent case so the rim diameter and thickness should be the same) ;D It is much simpler to neck down from 50 to 45 (just lube well and go slow) than to step up, and fireform, to 45 from 348. No extra dies needed.

Just call Starline they'll take yer money  ;)

The easiest way to form the .50 Alaskan cases is to trim to 1.90", form, then anneal.  THEN expand the case mouth and prime and load.  You really should anneal as the Starline cases are pretty hard to start and many will split on firing if you don't.

Thanks, I figured on annealing either before forming or after, posibly both.  I know what you mean about starline being pretty hard, but it also translates in pretty good brass too.  I wonder what the chances of Winchester making cases for the 45-75?

Will, if Winchesters availability of 38-55 brass is any indication of them making 45-75' - my bet is zero probability

You about the same as Winchester making there 73 or 76 again?  ::)  I figure by the time I get my hands on one starline will probably be making brass by then.  If not I'll probably size 50 alaskan to get me by.  Thanks

Jordison of the NWMP

I got 100 cases from Buffalo Arms, reformed from 348 Winchester, and they are great, especially the second time around (after BP loads) the cases fill out beuatifuly.  I use 'em in my Chapparal 1876 NWMP carbine...I know there's been a lot of negative comments about Chaparral's quality, but (myabe I got lucky) mine functions and looks terric.
