I have a friend who just picked up an Uberti Walker replica.

I am not sure about loading this beast.  A 30gr charge or Pyrodex disappears down the bore and the ball looks like it would not sit well either.

I guess a lot of wads could take up the slack but it seems that this thing was made for much larger loads.

I tend to like to use Pyrodex pistol pellets which are listed as 30gr equivalent in the 1858 Remmie.  Histocially it appears the Walker was loaded to 45-60gr which the later would be two pellets.

Is this safe?  how should this beast loaded?

PS. Don't look at the guy with the parasol. It might be contagious.

Howdy, Lorna!

Now this isn't gospel, but if I remember correctly, the original load was 60 or 70 gr. of BP!  Colt at that time had some problems with that load since the cylinders were made of iron.  They lowered the recommended load to 40 or 50 gr. and things were OK then.  When they went on to make the Dragoons, which were the direct decendants of the Walkers, they shortened the length of the cylinders (among other changes/improvements) so that they couldn't be over-charged with too much powder.  Modern replicas, however, have steel cylinders. Your Husband might want to load a couple full loads to see how they shoot, but most Walker (and Dragoon) shooters usually find that a charge around 30 to 40 gr. is the most accurate.
