How did the rows of gold lace on the belt translate to the officers rank?

Can you be more specific about the period, branch & ect.

The original I own is a single row of gold bullion lace the full width of the belt. I made leather ends that attach with snaps & friction so that I didn't have to modify the belt to use it with the GAF belt plate.

Mainly the Civil War but the Indian War period would help too.  Seems almost all officers wore them later with 3 stripes of gold and general officer used four or the oak leaf pattern on red russian leather.

I saw some at the Regimental Quartermaster in Gettysburg.  They are custom made since the gold braid makes it difficult to increase or decrease the belt's waist size.  I don't remember what they charge, and it may be dependent on the size and/or number or rows of gold braid.

I believe their website is regtqm.com but you can easily do a search for them on the net.

http://www.regtqm.com/I think these guys used to known as "Servant and Co" as it's the same storefront. If it's the same folks, they do good work, had all my stuff made there for the re-enactment in 1998 when I was stationed nearby...

Servant and Co is now Memories Past and they moved from near the old visitor center to just off the square. They were actually who I was thinking about with regard to making a dress belt.  Regimental Quartermaster is not the same outfit, but also provides excellent service and quality products.
