I came across a model 1873 in 32 WCF.  It is in great condition, is a real good shooter.  the serial number 649xxx puts it in 1910 manufacture year as near as I can tell, although one source showed it as 1906.  Real question is, the serial number stamped on the tang is 649xxxB.  I do not know what the B suffix is.  Can any of you firearms history buffs help me out here?

Okla Tom,

When I researched mine I found the same problem, evidently no one know why they have letters there.

Model 1873 Winchesters were serial numbered sequentially.

On guns numbered above 80,000 to 170,000 - the serial number is followed by an 'A'.

On guns numbered from 170,000 - 190,000 - the number is followed by a 'B'.

There seems to be no particular significance to this.
