I just use a 6 or 7 inch strip of belt leather left over from a belt I made one time. I rub red jeweler's rouge on the flesh side of it and work my knives along it much like you would a barber's strop. Since it's short, I do it with the leather lying on the work bench.

Howdy
You misunderstand, You strop to polish not to sharpen.
After you sharpen a blade then you strop to make the blade glide smooth through the leather with the
least amount of drag.
Here are the strops I use.
The green is for my blades from Bob Beard, his steel is so tough that red or white won't work in them.
The red and white are for other blades and my head knives.

Green is a new one to me. I have both Red and White Rouge.

WC, do you have any Henley blades? If so, what do or would you use to polish them up?

Thanks, you are a wealth of good info!

Paladin, I'm just getting into sharpening rather seriously, and after seeing what these people get for a strop....I'm sure nough gonna make my own!! I bought some sanding/grinding belts from these guys...

To cheap to buy one...  ;D Just made my own out of some scrap leather and some white rouge..... worked so well, I made another with some red rouge....  Old belt blanks work well.

I read on other forums folks bragging on a green compound, so I ordered a stick of it, and when it gets here....should be soon, I'll be making me a strop paddle.
