Hi Y'all,

On impulse I picked up a Remington Spartan 220 / Baikal IZH-43KH coach gun at the gun show today.  It's the one with external hammers.

I call myself getting ready to do NCOWS next year, as well as SASS.  My SAAs have the cross pin frame.  My question is, about what year time frame would the shotgun/SAA let me start in to find a persona?  My friends are always ragging me about my expertise with a shovel, so I'm thinking prospector so far.  How I picked my SASS alias.

Thanks,

Hi Y'all,

Kept poking around after I posted last night.  Looks like the cross pin on the Colt dates from about 1896.  Pretty late in the game, since I'm thinking somewhere late 1870s to early 1880s.  Guess I'll have to keep concentrating on my attire and come back to that detail on down the road.  Can't do much about it right now.  Bit of a disappointment though.  If I'd only known then what I know now .... coulda, shoulda, woulda.

What I could find on the shotgun looks like it would be OK for that period though.

Next budget items are hat, boots.  Ironically, it looks like the hat I wear everyday, a Greek sailor cap, could be correct for a sailor who jumped ship in San Francisco.  I've found several pictures with prospectors in Greek sailor caps, and I've read the design is about 500 yrs old.

Another type of hat that would look similar to the Greek cap was called a wheel-cap, sometimes a mechanic's cap.

That late in the century would put you ready to get in on the Alaskan gold rush.

But, if being good with a shovel is what does it for you. . . . :D:

Actually, Digger,
you are not between a rock and a hard place vis-a-vis the Colts with the cross pin.  UNLESS you wish to document a persona and become approved for the Originals class, you are free to use any of the approved firearms in NCOWS.  If you wish to represent a specific time frame in your apparel, and accouterments, and firearms, you certainly have every opportunity to do so.  If you choose not to do that, you are free to choose any of the approved firearms that suit your purposes.

Contrary to popular myth, we do not have stitch police or a bouncer with teeth a foot long, dripping blood.   ::) ;D :P

HI Y'all,

I didn't discover NCOWS until after I'd bought my guns for SASS, or I could have allowed for more overlap.  I've been running on boots and cowboy hat I already had, so I'm really at the beginning of my clothes.  I like the idea of setting the NCOWS standard, because it lets me kill two birds with one stone.  If I can achieve Originals, that would be excellent.  Once I get closer to it, maybe I can do some trades or figure something out for that final step.  Start with what I have, do what I can, plan for tomorrow, hope for the best.  It's the cowboy way.

Of course a man who was good with a shovel could always get work as a "Chambermaid" in a Livery Stable. :)

Might not be the best job in the world, but the work would be steady. :)

Had a cousin who raised prized bulls once.  Did a turn in the feed lot/barn for awhile.  It'll send you out with a pan and plan, fer sure. ;-)

Not to be picking on River City John,  but, the wheel hat goes back at least the "German" soldiers of the Napoleonic wars.  It was adopted by the US Army as the fatigue hat in 1839 and lasted till 1851.  There are photos of CSA troops wearing them in the ACW.

They are currently available by custom order from Books O'Toole who posts on this board!  I have 2 of his my own self! ;D  Ya can't do better!
