I haven't seen this yet - is there any particular type of knot that a bandana should be tied in, or will a regular square knot do?

I tie a for-in-hand knot like a regular tie.  Books used a ring or slide.  You have a lot of options!  I roll the tie up till it is about 1 1/2 inch wide and then treat it like a modern tie.  Sometimes I put the middle of the scarf in front, wrap it around twice and tie a bow knot, so it looks like a bow tie.  The possibilities are nearly endless!

That is way too much work.  I think it is called a 4 in hand knot cause it takes 4 hands to tie it.   For summer I tie mine loose, in the winter I fold it to about a 2" width wrap it around my neck twice and end with what ever knot I tie.  It is amazing how much warmer you feel with your scarf wrapped around your neck.
