Frontier era Texas Ranger books..........

Would someone chime in with recommendations on quality books containing not only history but personal stories of the old rangers that worked the frontier? Being a cheapskate, I'm going to try and find them at the public library first and then buy a few once I find the best of the best. That part could be challenging as the general public likely has little interest in the subject.

The Texas Rangers:  A Century of Defense by Walter Prescott Webb is the best that I know of.

By all means go and check it out at your local library first.  Nice hard bound copies w/dust jackets are available for about $ 20.00 if you decide to own one.

Classic work, great primary source material with plenty of personal stories about the Rangers during the years described: Six Years with the Texas Rangers 1875 to 1881, by James B. Gillett, Universsity of Nebraska Press (first printing about 1925 I think). Well written for an amateur writer, quick read, very enjoyable. Go for it on Amazon Uncle Stinky, you won't be disappointed. I'll give you a money back guarantee!!
