A side match you may want to try

Howdy all.
My wife, Freeda Bee Mee and I were in charge of the side matches for our State Blackpowder Shootout this year, and we wanted to do some things a little different. We were tired of the same old fastest pistol, fastest rifle, fastest shotgun, and also wanted to introduce people to blackpowder, with it being a blackpowder shootout. So we decided we would have a fastest stage using OUR guns and ammo.
Well, we decided to use extra guns that people had laying around. Nobodys main match guns, just stock guns with no shortstrokes, etc. We borrowed a 92 that had a bent barrel (shot straight tho), used my brand new Ruger .357 I won from Downrange tv (first shots thru it were by someone else shooting black), and a cheap chinese hammered double 12.
Firewater and I loaded up a bunch of 45 ammo, using real blackpowder, and a bunch of 12ga BP shotshells.

Then a stroke of luck, and Goex generously donated a case of 12 ga Black Dawgs, and a bunch of 45s and 38 Black Dawgs. We used most of it up, and had quite a few of our turnout shoot black for the first time. There were a few that really liked it, and some that didnt like the flash.
BUT, it introduced quite a few people to blackpowder shooting, which was the main reason for the sidematch in the first place. One gal liked it a lot, and then won the giveaway 58 Remington conversion later that night. I am hoping she will be shooting black next year.

I also got my dad hooked on APP at least, but he is going to try black sometime, at least in his shotshells.
Also got Terry of Run N Iron Customizing to shoot the whole match with full house 44-40s. He said it was just ok, but he was sure smiling every time.

Hopefully we have more people at our shoot next year, and I invite all of you to try a sidematch like this, to try to generate some of those guys that wont shoot black, to at least give it a try.

D.M. that is using the old head for something other than a hat rack.    Good to hear some folks got to try the real powder and had some fun to boot. It is always nice to hear of someone coming up with something new. Good job!

My club The Cowboys has a couple interesting things as sort of side matches coming up for the GFBJL. Two different kinds of poker games, Texas hold'em and dealers choice. Each winner will get a shotgun from the two games. Then there is pumpkin' bowling, since GFBJL is right near Halloween. Prize for that too. Then there is BP night shooting. Four stages of nothing but flash, boom, sparks and what have you and the smile factor is huge.

That ranks you high in the Soot Lord standings as a true apostle of the Holy Black.  Mass exposure with hands on learning is as good as it gets when it comes to bringing converts to the One True Powder.  From this day forth, you may proudly wear the title SOOT LORD.
