Last night I got I email from Track of the Wolf stating Goex is raising their prices 10% at the end of the month.
Before that happens I want to lay in a stock of powder, figured I would order 50lbs.

Here-to-for I have been using 2f & 3f (cause I got allot of it) but have been meaning to test the Cowboy & Cartridge types. Well it appears I have run out of time & need to make a decision. I can split the order up but want to order the bulk of it as a single powder type.

What you pards recommend?

I load for 32-20, 38-40, 44-40, 45LC, 45-70 & 50-110

Howdy,

I'd buy standard FFg as the best "all around" do everything black powder.

Seems like we have a consensus...

I already have a good stock of 2 & 3f, what I was really fishing for was input on the Cowboy & Cartridge grades.  ;D

Any of ya'll had any luck with them?

I use FFg in everything. 44-40, 45 Schofield, 45 Colt, 45-70 and 12 gauge.
That's bad business! How long do you think I'd stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he'd pay me that much to stop robbing him, I'd stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Cartridge is a very good powder for the 45-70, maybe not the best for velocity but it has sure proven accurate for me and 3 rifles.
3f express works really well in the smaller cartridges and the 45-70. If just strictly for the wcf cartridges and the colt then plain ol 3 is hard to beat.
For the 50 I'ld think Cartridge would work well, but 1f express would probably my first choice.

Rusty, here's the granulation mix of Cowboy and Cartridge:

Cowboy Powder
20 mesh - 32.9% retained
30 mesh - 64.9% retained
Thru      - 2.2%

Goex Cartridge – (05-37) 02OC07B
12 mesh – 0.62% retained
14 mesh – 0.03% retained
20 mesh – 97.54% retained
30 mesh – 01.70% retained
Through – 0.11%

So, what we are talking about is Cowboy is a juiced up FFg and Cartridge is primarily FFg.  I have never shot the Cowboy stuff but have shot many cans of CTG for BPCR reloads and it works very good.  If you plan to just use your powder for CAS ... order a mixed lot of (25) FFg - (10) Cowboy and (15) Cartridge.  Then give them a try ... stuff won't go bad

Have to remember, at the distances we shoot CAS ... firecracker powder will work.  Just ask Dick Dastardly.  He shoots that Lido stuff! and they haven't raised their price  ;)

Yer rite John Boy, but next batch is going to be Schuetzen.  I've got some pards that will go together and we are buying a couple of cases.  The Schuetzen doesn't cost that much more at Deer Creek than LIDU and it has been building a good following.

So, for the next batch at least, I'm going to forsake the firecracker stuff and give the German product a ride.

Thanks pards,

I am partial to Goex, its the 1st powder I every used so I am kinda sentimental  ;D I have tried other brands & wasn't sufficiently impressed to switch.

I bought 30 tins of fffg, 15 of ffg & 5 of ffffg (Need primer for my Pennsylvania rifles too). I use fffg the most for my pistol cartridges, I find they dont seem to foul as much as ffg & I see better velocities to boot  8)

I was going to say I ONLY used Goex 2F, but I just realized that I have 6 cans of Goex Cartridge left in my locker.

So,...

I ONLY use Goex Cartridge.
