That is an ol' wives tale, pardner.  ;)  Not ALL petroleum products are bad "juju" with BP. Clean her like you would any new firearm, down till the pores are clean.

Sage advice and fact there for ya Preacher Curt ,   ;D

I would use Hoppes Nitro to clean her good first , Oil her up , then after shooting I would probably go with Hoppes BP cleaner . But that's just me  ;D

Clean the gun like you would any fine black powder gun.  Shoot the gun.  Clean it again the same.  Soon the gun will become 'seasoned'.  It will expect that kind of treatment each and every time it goes to the range.  Don't neglect the gun.  Simply shoot it and clean it.

And for those of us who have already tainted the purity of the firearm, is there anything we can say or do to make it right with her?  Will she ever understand that circumstances were such that bp was not allowed at the range when we first met and the newbie was happy to accept what was offered as tutorial to learn about shooting; it's not like I cheated on her.  Tell me there's still hope between us.

I've got my excuses and I'm stickin' to 'em.

I'd just run a couple of dry patches through it, then maybe 1 or 2 wetted with Isopropyl Alcohol (Rubbing Alcohol) and then follow it up with a patch lightly coated with Bore Butter or a similar preservative BP lube.

After that, patches using either water or a good BP Cleaner, a few dry patches and one coated with Bore Butter is all I ever use afterwords.

It's pretty quick and easy ~6 patches in ~3 min. and you're all ready until next time.

(Yeah, I do wipe down my barrel, action and Breechblock also)
